THE
SALENTO AND ITS ART
We cannot but admire Lecce's
three Gates from a historical and architectural perspective:
The first is Porta Napoli built in 1548, followed
by Porta Rudiae and Porta S. Biagio. At this point
of our schedule, it is a must to pay a visit to Castello
di Carlo V, built in the mid 1500's embellished by
typical renaissance frames, doors and windows.
Moreover, comprising over 99 Communes, Salento offers
many alternative routes, each one different from the
other. As a matter of fact, it is possible to choose
the Maglie-Galatina route reaching Maglie via the
ss. 275 motorway, this being a centre having interesting
buildings in baroque style, the Mother Church, the
Votiva Column and the Madonna Delle Grazie Church,
Capece Palace, the Our Lady of Sorrows Sanctuary.
From here we approach Galatina where dozens of stately
mansions exist enriching this town with baroque inlays:
the Saint Peter Church, the Saint Catherine of D'Alessandria
Basilica, the Franciscan Convent, the ex Domenican
Convent.
Alternatively or additional to the Maglie-Galatina
route is the Galatone-Nardò route via the ss
101 motorway. At Nardò we can find some examples
of the splendid baroque buildings such as the Cathedral,
the Domenican Convent, Salandra Square.
