S.
MARIA DI LEUCA - OTRANTO
The route is about 50 km over
the coast, enjoying a view of the coast and the sea.
Salentina. The point of departure is Leuca, queen
of Salento, which dominates the Ionian and the Adriatic
Seas.
A seaside locality greatly admired for its splendid
sea and its sumptuous and elegant nineteenth century
villas. The Sanctuary, known as "finis terrae",
is imposingly erected above a typical headland, which
besides offering the tourist a mystic atmosphere,
offers a panoramic view of the entire town.
The typical lighthouse which controls the meeting
point of the two seas rising up to a height of 50
mt, cannot fail to be mentioned. Fairly distant from
S. Maria di Leuca is Tricase having a historical centre
and its castle, followed by the Ciolo locality with
a coastal and sea view of rare beauty. Progressing
along the route we reach Castro, a typical town famous
for its lovely Zinzulusa Caves, renowned for their
evocative calcareous formations.
Still along the coast, we reach the Santa Cesarea
centre, a famous thermal station with sulphur caves.
Moreover, merit should also be given to the Porto
Badisco gorge, the mythical port for the disembarkment
of Enea, to finally reach Otranto, with its boundless
beaches, its characteristic historical centre, the
cathedral and its mosaics, the basilica of Saint Peter,
the imposing castle and its bastions.
